Great Blue Heron
You
know how computer nerds may look a bit awkward at their desks, but they're masters
of coding? Well, great blue herons are the computer nerds of the bird world:
they look awkward in flight, but they're masters of fishing. These four-foot-tall
birds are all legs, which they use to their advantage by wading into shallow
pools and feeding on tadpoles and tiny fish. When fishing, great blue herons
will wade with gentle, easy steps that don't disturbing the water; then, with
lightning-quick reflexes, they pluck up their food. Because they rely on water
for survival, the best places to see these magnificent birds is along rivers
or in wetland areas. They usually nest in tall cottonwoods overlooking the water
and return to the same nesting sites year after year.
